Diploma of Film


Make your establishing shot in film

Be cast directly into a world-class creative environment with this hands-on diploma. Guided by expert lecturers you will gain an in-depth introduction to film, from script writing and film production, right through to digital post-production.

You will engage in collaborative studio-based learning where you will have access to all the latest equipment and software including DaVinci Resolve colour grading software and Adobe Creative Cloud. Your growth and development will be assessed through the completion of industry-based projects, not theoretical based essays.

You’ll feel like you are already working, with the amount of hands-on experience you’ll gain operating film production equipment for a variety of screen contexts, including cameras, lighting and sound. You’ll also learn about digital post-production including audio mixing, tilting colour grading and the authoring processes.

Upon completion you will be eligible for up to 80 credit points towards either the Bachelor of Film (Production) or the Bachelor of Film (Post Production).

Diploma of Film

The Diploma of Film has a strong practical focus, underpinned by key theoretical components. The course content is informed by our strong links to industry and our 40-year history in designing and teaching creative media courses.

To complement your technical skills, you will graduate with skills across:

  • Employability skills specific to creative media.  
  • Communication, including how to communicate specialist technical and creative ideas and perspectives in the graphic design discipline to others.
  • Introductory project management and different project management methodologies
  • Teamwork and collaboration in the context of creative media.
  • Scholarly techniques for higher education.

You will learn

During your course you will gain an introduction to:

  • Film studies fundamentals including theory, history including key cinematic movements, technological advancements, visual aesthetics and issues affecting filmmaking practice.
  • Scholarly methods for analyzing film including language, narrative structures, genre studies, approaches to film authorship, experiential and avant-garde film.
  • Principles of storytelling including techniques required to write effective dialogue and scene descriptions.
  • Screen writing software.
  • Operation of film production equipment including cameras, lighting and sound equipment.
  • An understanding of the different roles and responsibilities in film production and working film crews.
  • Basic post production technical processes and workflows including audio visual editing, sound mixing, title and colour grading tools.
  • Exposure to post production software including Adobe Photoshop and After Effects.

Entry requirements

Applicants for Diploma courses must satisfy one of the following minimum entry criteria:

  • Completion of an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (SSCE) or equivalent, OR
  • Completion of a certificate IV level qualification issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), OR

Under section 6.8 of the Student Progression, Exclusion and Graduation Policy, SAE reserves the right to apply conditional enrollments to students who apply to SAE via alternative entry. The Academic Coordinator will determine an appropriate set of support mechanisms for each student, based on individual experience and merit.
